Workers have started removing a fence less than a year after it was installed to protect a southern New Jersey bridge from a terrorist attack.
Critics have said the 8-foot-high chain link fence topped with barbed wire was an ineffective eyesore that gave the wrong impression to tourists who cross the Garden State Parkway's Great Egg Harbor Bridge.
“It was something that was an apparent waste of taxpayer dollars.” Vicki Clark, president of the Cape May County Chamber of Commerce, told the Press of Atlantic City.
The fence had cost $250,000.
New Jersey Turnpike Authority spokesman Tom Feeney told The Press of Atlantic City he would not know how much the removal of the fence would cost until it was finished.
