Former Paralyzed Athlete Running for Office

Adam Taliaferro seeking Gloucester County freeholder seat

A former Penn State football player who was once paralyzed during a game is trying to get into New Jersey politics.

Democratic Party officials say Adam Taliaferro, of Woolwich Township, is running for freeholder in Gloucester County.

The Voorhees native suffered a severe spinal cord injury in 2000 while making a tackle for the Nittany Lions. Doctors feared he would never walk again.

Taliaferro recovered, graduated from Penn State and went to law school at Rutgers-Camden. He’s an attorney with Duane Morris, specializing in employment law and litigation.

Taliaferro, 29, was picked to replace retiring Gloucester County Freeholder William Wallace on the Democratic ticket in the swing county.

The Gloucester County Times reported on Tuesday that Taliaferro was among seven candidates considered for the open seat. He will join Freeholder Heather Simmons of Glassboro and Lyman Barnes from Logan Township on the ballot.

The Republican freeholder candidates are Barbara Capelli, of Wenonah, Penni Heritage, of Harrison Township and Mike Pantaleo, of Elk Township.

Democrats currently hold a 5-2 majority on the board.
