The former mayor of an eastern Pennsylvania town has entered into a first-time offender program that could remove an $8,000 theft charge from his record.
Former Nazareth Mayor Carl Strye Jr. entered the rehab program on Wednesday. He must complete a year of probation and pay court fees.
Strye and his attorney had no comment as they left the Easton courthouse. Strye resigned earlier this month.
He was charged in April with stealing from the social club of Vigilance Hose Company between 2009 and 2013.
Strye had been the group's longtime president.
Strye has paid back the $8,000.
Strye admitted he stole the money as a condition of his entry into the program. He has said the matter should've been handled "in house."
