A Pittsburgh suburb is paying its embattled police chief nearly $200,000 to retire.
Brentwood's borough council agreed to the settlement after an internal investigation found 62-year-old Robert Butelli mismanaged the department, used a police vehicle for personal use and filed a false accident report.
Butelli told the Tribune-Review on Tuesday that his Sept. 4 suspension and subsequent exit resulted from the council president and mayor's "personal and political vendettas."
He said some officials in the borough of 9,600 people wanted to use police "as their own palace guards."
Butelli led the department since 2001. He'll be paid for 676 hours of unused sick, vacation and personal time. He'll also be compensated for insurance and pension benefits.
Council approved the settlement Nov. 17. Butelli's retirement took effect the same day.
