Delaware in the GOP Presidential Spotlight

Visits by Romney, Gingrich planned this week

With two weeks to go before the Presidential primary election in Delaware, Republican candidates were making plans for campaign stops there.

Before suspending his candidacy on Tuesday, Rick Santorum had scheduled a Wednesday afternoon town hall meeting in Camden. The former Pa. senator declared he would continue fighting for his supporters, and did not immediately endorse front runner Mitt Romney.

Romney is paying a visit to Wilmington on Tuesday. He’s holding an evening rally at the RC Fabricators steel company.

The News Journal reported the staff of former Congressman Newt Gingrich also announced campaign stops in Delaware on Wednesday. Gingrich made several appearances in the state over the past several weeks.

Of the five primaries being held on April 24, Delaware has the smallest pool of available delegates, with 17. The Republican primary has been designated as a β€˜winner take all’ contest for the candidate with the most votes.

The other primaries on April 24 could have much bigger stakes. Pennsylvania has 72 delegates, with 28 in Connecticut, 19 in Rhode Island and the largest number, 95, in the New York primary.

Rick Santorum could still be in line to pick up additional delegates in the states where his name remains on the ballot.`
