Panel Eyes Cargo Facility Proposal at Delaware Port

Members of a panel exploring the feasibility of expanding port operations in Delaware are reviewing a legal opinion regarding a request by longshoremen to pay for an environmental assessment of a site for a proposed cargo facility just south of the existing Wilmington port.

The longshoremen are pressing for a container facility at Riveredge Industrial Park and say an environmental study of the site should begin while port officials await a strategic study of Delaware port operations.

But the task force rejected the request last month, with some questioning whether the group has authority to make appropriations.

In addition to reviewing the longshoremen's request for an environmental study, the task force planned to examine options Wednesday for expanding operations at the existing port or at the Riveredge location.
