NJ Senate considering last batch of vetoed bills on Tuesday

Democrats in the New Jersey Senate have started a second day of trying to override Republican Gov. Chris Christie's budget vetoes.

Up for consideration Tuesday is whether to restore $139 million in aid to distressed communities.

That aid was among dozens of items Christie vetoed before signing the new state budget.

Lawmakers will also vote on tuition aid grants funding and other items.

Democrats on Monday failed to muster the three Republican votes needed to override any of the vetoes. The party doesn't have veto-proof majorities in either chamber.

Most of Monday’s votes broke along party lines, 24 Democrats and 15 Republicans. An override would need 27 votes.

Christie shaved $1.3 billion in spending, including $900 million in Democrat add-ins, before signing a $29.7 billion budget into law. Most of the vetoes targeted money Democrats added for social service programs.

The Assembly will also hold hearings on the budget cuts sometime this summer.
