Bustling Legislature Before the Break

Pa. lawmakers try to wrap up, tie ribbons on bills

A busy day is under way at the state Capitol as lawmakers scramble to wrap up major legislation before their traditional holiday break from Harrisburg.

Wednesday was scheduled to be the last session day of the year for state senators, and a lot of votes were expected.

On tap in the Senate are votes on bills that would overhaul regulations for clinics that perform abortions and create new boundaries for Pennsylvania's shrinking number of U.S. House districts.

The Senate may also advance a bill to impose a fee on Pennsylvania's booming natural gas drilling and update industry regulations as the chamber's Republican leaders seek an agreement on it with their House counterparts.

Meanwhile, House Republicans were discussing a potential vote on wide-ranging public schools legislation that hasn't been publicly unveiled.
