Bond Decision Likely for Doctor Tied to NJ Sen. Menendez

A federal judge says he hopes to set bond for a Florida doctor charged alongside New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez at a hearing Wednesday.

U.S. Magistrate Judge James Hopkins said Monday he anticipated issuing an order on Dr. Salomon Melgen's release when a bond hearing reconvenes in West Palm Beach.

Melgen has been jailed for 11 weeks since being arrested in a sweeping case of Medicare fraud. He faces a separate case with Menendez on corruption charges.

Melgen has pleaded not guilty in both cases.

Hopkins ruled last month that Melgen would be jailed until standing trial in the Medicare case, but he was overruled by a district judge. Prosecutors have aimed to set bail that would limit his access to cash and make it harder for him to flee.
