Berks Voters Choosing New State Senator

Special election will determine O'Pake's successor

The polls are open in Berks County as voters choose a successor to the late state Sen. Michael O'Pake.

The candidates in Tuesday's special election in the 11th Senate District are former county commissioner Judy Schwank, a Democrat, and Republican Larry Medaglia, the county register of wills.

O'Pake, a Democrat, was the longest-serving member of the Legislature and the Senate minority whip when he died in late December of complications from heart-bypass surgery.

O'Pake died halfway through his 10th Senate term. The winner of the special election will serve out the two years left in that term.

Republicans control the state Senate, 30-19.
