Arbitrator Delivers Neshaminy Teacher Contract Report

Findings to be made public at Tuesday School Board meeting

The public could learn on Tuesday details of a state-appointed arbitrator’s findings in the Neshaminy School District’s four-year teachers’ contract dispute.

The non-binding report was delivered last Thursday to the school board and the Neshaminy Federation of Teachers. They have ten days to review it and decide whether to accept or reject the findings.

Teachers in the Bucks Country district went on strike for eight days in January after the Board of Education said it couldn’t afford the contract proposal teachers were offering. The last contract expired in 2008.

NFT President Louise Boyd said teachers plan to review and consider the arbitrator’s award on Wednesday. Boyd said the report does not appear to give either side a contract “victory.”

“The goal of negotiations should be compromise that is fair to all and advances our educational goals,” said Boyd in a statement released on Friday.

Rejection of the findings by either side would likely mean negotiations would resume.

The teachers’ union has the option of calling for another strike before the school year ends in June.

The Neshaminy Board of School Directors meets Tuesday night at 8 at Maple Point Middle School in Langhorne.
