Andrews to Pay for Scotland Trip

South Jersey congressman agrees to repay campaign for family vacation

South Jersey Congressman Rob Andrews has decided that he should pay out of his own pocket for a family trip to Scotland last summer.

Andrews, a Camden County democrat, says he's going to refund his campaign about $10,000 that it spent last June on his trip to the wedding of a donor and campaign adviser in Edinburgh, Scotland. He says the campaign will then donate the money to charity.

On Tuesday Andrews said the campaign expense, which included $7,725 for a three-night stay at a five-star hotel, was legal, but that criticism of it was interfering with his work.

The campaign did not name the donor whose Scottish wedding Andrews attended.

The expenses that Andrews said were campaign related will be repaid from his personal funds and then that money donated to a group dedicated to helping local homeless veterans.

The expenses were first reported by The Star-Ledger of New Jersey. The newspaper reported that other spending questions uncovered in its report have not been addressed by Andrews or his campaign.

According to the Star-Ledger the Washington-based Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington is considering filing a complaint with the Federal Election Commission about Andrews’ campaign spending.
