Whitey Bulger's Possessions Net More Than $100K at Auction

Items once owned by Boston's most notorious mob boss sold at auction for more than $100,000 Saturday.

Clothing, jewelry, books and other possessions once owned by James "Whitey" Bulger and longtime girlfriend Catherine Greig went up for auction at the Boston Convention Center and online.

The U.S. Marshals Service sold possessions like a silver "Psycho Killer" skull ring — which went for $5,200 — and the hat Bulger was wearing during his 2011 arrest — it cost a bidder $6,400.

In total, 138 items went up for auction Saturday and sold for a sum of $109,295. The highest bid was for a Claddagh ring with a heart-shaped diamond, which sold for $23,000.

But not everything that sold was so inherently valuable — someone spent $160 on Bulger's 1992 excise tax bill. The gangster kept his own mugshot from 1963, and the Marshals sold it for $1,900. And a large collection of Christmas items, including a broken glass Santa and a stuffed snowman, sold for $260.
