Trump Open to Gas Tax Hike for Rebuilding

The federal gas tax hasn't been raised in 20 years

President Donald Trump has said he would consider a gas tax hike as a means to pay for infrastructure improvements, NBC News reported.

The comment comes amid likely opposition from the GOP, as well as promises from his team that the building plan won’t cost taxpayers.

The federal gas tax is 18.4 cents per gallon, and 24.4 cents for diesel. It hasn’t been raised in 20 years. Historically, the GOP has been opposed to spending or tax hikes to fund road and bridge repairs.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer on Monday said the president was considering the idea out of respect for the truckers’ industry group. Trump said he expects the infrastructure plan to be released in two to three weeks.
