One man was killed and 20 people were hurt after a car crashed into a SEPTA trolley bus in Philadelphia Monday night.
Jamarr Sturgis, 34, of Philadelphia was driving a 2006 Red Dodge Magnum at a high speed down Arrott Street at 7:13 p.m. Monday, police said. At the same time a 2007 SEPTA New Flyer Trolley Bus was in front of it and had stopped at a stop sign, according to investigators.
Police say Sturgis was unable to stop his vehicle in time and it slammed into the back of the trolley bus.
"This vehicle behind it just didn't stop," said Philadelphia Police Captain Drew Techner. "The only thing that stopped it was the fact that there was a bus in its path. Speed was definitely involved with this accident."
Sturgis was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, a 43-year-old man, was taken to the Einstein Medical Center where he is currently in critical condition.
The trolley bus had 19 passengers on board. All of the passengers were taken to Einstein where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Officials continue to investigate the crash.
