Trayvon Martin Family Marks One Year Since Shooting Death with Vigil

Tuesday marks the one-year anniversary of the day that Trayvon Martin was shot and killed.

The hype of his son's news story may have dissipated, but Trayvon Martin’s father said Tuesday that as parents of a slain child, they will never move on.

Tracy Martin made the comment Tuesday on the show "MSNBC Live with Thomas Roberts."

"Every day, different news breaks, and we don't expect Trayvon to be the top story every day in the media, but he's definitely the top story in our life," Martin said.

Tuesday marks the one-year anniversary of the day that Trayvon Martin was shot and killed. On Feb. 26, 2012, neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman spotted the 17-year-old walking through a central Florida neighborhood and called police to report a suspicious person. According to Zimmerman, the two got into a fight, during which Zimmerman shot Martin. Zimmerman says he acted in self-defense after Martin attacked him first.

The case generated not only controversy but also a nationwide debate on Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law.

On Tuesday's show, the teen's mother, Sybrina Fulton, talked about what stirred the situation in the very beginning.

"I think if they had initially arrested him for the murder of Trayvon Martin, we would not have had so many rallies and so much support from people, because they were upset that he was not arrested," she said.

George Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to a second degree murder charge and his trial is expected to start in the summer.

The Trayvon Martin Foundation was holding a vigil at New York's Union Square Park at 6 p.m. A moment of silence was scheduled for 7:17 p.m.

"I want you to remember his name, and the influence and the power and the magnitude of that influence he has had," said Trayvon Martin's cousin Sequan Jones.
