Quarantine vs. Isolation: What's the Difference?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are distinct differences between when a person is isolated or quarantined.

Isolation: People who are ill with an infectious disease are placed in isolation. This means they were exposed to the disease, have been diagnosed show symptoms of the disease. They are infectious.

Quarantine: People with direct exposure to the bodily fluids of an infectious patient are placed in quarantine until symptoms appear. They are not considered infectious.

Self-Monitoring: Self-monitoring means that people check their own temperature twice daily and monitor themselves for other symptoms of the disease.
