The Maryland State Police are investigating as a hate crime graffiti on a former military building proposed as housing for immigrant children in Westminster.

Saturday night or early Sunday, someone spray-painted the former Army Reserve Center with this message: "NO ILLEAGLES HERE NO UNDOCUMENTED DEMOCRATS.''

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services considered using the center for children who cross the U.S.-Mexico border illegally, but told local officials Saturday they had dropped the idea.

Lt. Patrick McCrory, commander of the state police's Westminster barrack, told the Carroll County Times that police don't have suspects or witnesses. He says police may get leads from someone who starts bragging about what happened.

Hate crimes are a misdemeanor punishable by up to three years in a prison and a $5,000 fine.
