Man Makes Chicago's Homeless His Valentines

One Chicago resident wanted to spread love on Valentine’s Day, and that’s just what he did.

Peter Vitale woke up early on Friday, sans valentine, and decided to share his love with the city's homeless.

Vitale bought candy in heart-shaped boxes and began handing them out to homeless people on downtown streets.

“It’s supposed to be a day for love and I just wanted to inspire hope and spread love,” said the 25-year-old bartender. “We pass by these people when we’re going to work or to the [train] and I just thought it was fitting to give it to them.”

Vitale bought his valentines coffee and breakfast, and gave them the heart-shaped candy valentines.

“I just wanted them to know, you know, we walk past [them] every single day, but someone out there cares,” he said. “I wanted to inspire a little bit of hope for them you know?”

Vitale filmed his encounters, which he later turned into a YouTube video, and said he hoped his venture would inspire others.

“Especially in Chicago everybody is off on their own, you don’t see too much camaraderie in the city sometimes and I wanted to inspire people to do that sort of thing,” he said. “Random acts of kindness, pass it along, pay it forward. There’s not enough of that in this world or even in this city.”
