Lightning Strikes, Kills Pennsylvania Boy

A lightning strike claimed the life of a Pennsylvania boy out for a dip in a local swimming hole over Labor Day Weekend.

The National Weather Service said that due to preliminary reports, they consider a boy’s death in Lancaster County Sunday to be caused by lightning.

The unidentified boy and two friends were swimming in Conowingo Creek near Nottingham Road and Soapstone Hill Road in Fulton Township Sunday afternoon when the lightning struck, according to Lancaster Online.

Crews used all-terrain vehicles to drive thorough a field to reach the creek, Robert Fulton Fire Chief Tracy Tomlinson told Lancaster Online. Crews then rushed two of the boys to Lancaster General Hospital. The boys were transferred to Hershey Medical Center.

The Dauphin County coroner's office said one boy was pronounced dead at the Hershey hospital Sunday evening. His name and age were not immediately known. The condition of the other boy hasn't been released. Officials said the third person was uninjured.

Authorities didn’t release ages for the boys.

The death is the 21st deadly strike in the country this year – all but 18 taking the lives of males, according to numbers released by the National Weather Service.
