It’s an important rite of passage in any woman’s life.
It’s a time when she says "yes" to one of the biggest decisions she will make.
It’s the time when everything will be altered forever, but the late nights, backaches, and lost sleep will all be worth it in the end.
Long Beach resident Benita Abraham said yes…to a job!
The 37-year-old highlighted the momentous occasion with a photo shoot, which obviously struck a chord with Facebook users across the social media platform as it was shared nearly 20,000 times, and liked 16,000 times.
Abraham, a Houston native, had been looking for a job for about seven months after getting laid off.
The Long Beach resident finally scored an awesome gig in the healthcare administrative field, in which she has worked for 15 years, that lined up with her life "financially" and "culturally."
It was at that time that she started kicking around the idea with her friends to take the traditional engagement and pregnancy announcement photo shoots and flip the script.
"Honestly, in my culture specifically, there's a lot of pressure for girls to get married at a certain age," Abraham, who is a first generation Indian, said. "Your role is to get married, have a family and take care of that family, and then have grandbabies.
But Abraham said she has always been extremely career-focused.
"I wasn't raised that way. My daddy raised my sister and I to be independent," Abraham said.
She said she’s smashed through her personal goals, and when it came time to capture this significant occasion on film, she turned to her friend of 20 plus years and photographer, Liju Mathew.
The best part of all?
She’s been receiving message after Facebook message from women across the nation sharing their stories – how they were also laid of, and finally found a job, or how they feel connected to her because of her photo shoot.
She’s even getting messages from women who need her to be their best friend.
All hail this Southern California trailblazer.
