Alabama Governor Pleads Guilty to State Law Violations, Resigns

The scandal erupted in March 2016 when an Alabama police officer claimed his employment was terminated after he refused to cover up the alleged illicit romance

The 'Love Gov' pleaded guilty Monday to misdemeanor campaign finance charges and has resigned to avoid impeachment, NBC News reported.

Alabama's now-former Gov. Robert Bentley gave his resignation Monday amid allegations he tried to cover-up an adulterous affair with a former adviser. He has been replaced by former Lt. Gov. Kay Ivey, who was sworn in Monday evening.

The state's House Judiciary Committee began impeachment hearings Monday over the allegations that 74-year-old Bentley "encouraged an atmosphere of intimidation" to silence his staff and "protect his reputation."
