An 11-year FDNY veteran from the Bronx has become the first woman to be featured in the department's annual Calendar of Heroes.

Danae Mines, who is assigned to Engine Co. 60 and is one of only 41 women in the department, told the Daily News she was determined to get in the calendar after seeing an open call for auditions posted on a firehouse wall last year.

She told the paper she felt a little nervous waiting in line with dozens of men to try out for one of the coveted pages, which usually feature shirtless men, but she stood strong -- and it paid off.

Mines started out as an EMT and was promoted to firefighter in 2003, the News reported. She told the paper she wanted her picture in the calendar in part so that "young girls and young women can see me and know that they can do this job."

This year's calendar features Mines and 12 other active firefighters at firehouses and other locations across the city. Those featured in the calendar were signing purchased copies in Times Square Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. It can also be ordered online here.

All proceeds from the sale of the $17.95 calendar go directly to the FDNY Foundation, the not-for-profit arm of the FDNY which was established to promote fire safety education for residents of New York City and to provide professional development, training and education for FDNY members.
