Middle School Counselor Sells Pot to Kids: Police

A 20-year-old after school counselor at a San Jose middle school is facing charges that he sold marijuana to a pair of students, who have also been suspended.

San Jose police said they arrested Edward Diaz on Tuesday about 4:30 p.m. after they were able to confirm a school report that he allegedly sold pot to two students through an afterschool program called "Think Together," located on school property on Cottle Road.

A program coordinator said Diaz was supposed to help students at Willow Glen Middle School with homework and coordinate enrichment and health activities.

The program contracts with the district, and so Diaz is not formally associated with the San Jose Unified School District. Think Together manager Tony Dodero said that Diaz has been fired and that he considers this an "isolated" incident.

Like all his employees, Dodero said Diaz was put through a criminal background check and passed.

The school sent a letter home on Wednesday, telling parents what happened, and assuring them that they called police as soon as they received the tip. They told the parents that Diaz would "not be returning to the site."

One Willow Glen parent said what happened is a shame.

"Sometimes people make bad choices," Julia Blom said. " But I think that the school did a great job of getting the word out to us.”
