Drone Footage Shows Jersey Shore Town Before and After Monster Storm

Striking drone footage shows images of Belmar, New Jersey, before and after a monster snowstorm walloped the East Coast this weekend, bringing massive storm surges and record floodwaters to parts of the Jersey Shore.

The video, taken by Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty, shows sand bars stacked up along the ocean, shielding the town from swollen surf. The dunes worked — Doherty said no flooding was reported in Belmar. Sunday's footage shows a blanket of white coating roads and rooftops.

While the dunes beat back surf in Ocean County, it was another story farther south, where storm surges wreaked havoc.

Wildwood was among the hardest-hit communities, with floodwaters a foot and a half higher than those spurred by Superstorm Sandy, according to North Wildwood Mayor Patrick Rosenello.

Emergency personnel evacuated residents whose homes became waterlogged, and the town opened a shelter to house those who fled.

Sea Isle and Ocean City also suffered severe flooding, and with another high tide imminent Sunday evening, the threat had yet to pass.
