Third American Killed in Germanwings Crash ID'd As New Yorker's Son

One of the three Americans killed when a co-pilot of a German jet crashed into the French Alps was the son of a New Yorker, according to multiple media reports.

The state department identified Robert Oliver Calvo as the third American killed in the apparently intentional crash of the Germanwings airliner earlier this week. Two other Americans were identified as a government contractor from Northern Virginia and her daughter.

Calvo was born in Spain but has American citizenship because his father, 73-year-old retired English teacher Robert Tansill Oliver, is originally from New York, according to Reuters. Oliver has lived in Barcelona since 1966.

The other two Americans on board the doomed flight were Yvonne Selke, an employee of Booz Allen Hamilton Inc. in Washington, D.C. and her adult daughter, Emily Selke.

A Booz Allen spokeswoman said Yvonne Selke was a "wonderful co-worker and a dedicated employee" who was with the company for nearly 23 years.

Emily Selke graduated from Drexel University in 2013 and worked as a community manager at Carr Workplaces in Alexandria, Virginia, according to her LinkedIn page.

Calvo and the Selkes were among the 150 people killed when Germanwings co-pilot Andreas Lubitz barricaded himself inside the cockpit and intentionally rammed his plane full-speed into the mountains amid the captain’s frantic pounding on the door and screams of terror from the passengers.

Prosecutors revealed that Lubitz’s “intention was to destroy” the plane after listening to the frantic final minutes from the plane’s black box voice recorder.
