Al-Jazeera Targeted in Cyberattack Amid Diplomatic Tension

The attack comes after Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain severed ties with Qatar this week, after accusing the country of supporting terrorism

Amid Qatar's negotiations with neighboring Arab nations, Al-Jazeera, the state-owned media company of Qatar, was targeted in a cyberattack Thursday, according to a statement from the media company.

It was not immediately clear who is responsible for the attacks, or what damage it caused to Al-Jazeera's operations. The Qatari government has not made an official statement about the attack.

The attack comes after Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain severed ties with Qatar this week, after accusing the country of supporting terrorism. Qatar denies the allegations.

The countries that split ties made no demands of Qatar as their decision plunged the international travel hub into chaos and ignited the biggest diplomatic crisis in the Gulf since the 1991 war against Iraq.

Al-Jazeera has long angered Middle Eastern governments with its coverage of protests, opposition movements and controversial issues.

Al-Jazeera's offices have been shut down by authorities in Saudi Arabia and Jordan.
