6 More Passengers File Lawsuits Against Amtrak Over Derailment

A law firm says it will be seeking punitive damages in lawsuits filed on behalf of six more passengers in the deadly May derailment of an Amtrak train in Philadelphia.

Baum, Hedlund, Aristei & Goldman said Monday the complaints filed in federal court in Philadelphia will be consolidated with others filed earlier.

The suits allege that the accident could have been avoided had Amtrak implemented proper precautions and safety measures.

Eight people were killed and more than 200 were injured on May 12 when the train entered a sharp curve at more than twice the 50 mph speed limit.

Several of the dozens of lawsuits filed earlier also seek punitive damages. Amtrak has said the company will not oppose claims for compensatory damages.
