A 19-year-old man is listed in critical condition after he was shot by an Upper Darby Police officer early Monday morning, according to Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood.
Joshua Burno called 911 around 1 a.m. Monday and said he was going to kill his family and himself at the family home on the 2400 block of Greenhill Road, according to Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood.
When officers arrived, the home was dark but the front door was open. Burno's mother came outside, according to Chitwood, and told officers her two son's, Burno and a 16-year-old were inside.
When the officers walked into the house, Burno was hiding in a closet, said Chitwood.
Chitwood says like a scene out of a horror movie, Burno broke down the door and was swinging an ax at the officers. He also had a box cutter in his pants and a steak knife was nearby.
One of the officers shot Burno. He's being treated at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and is expected to recover.

Chitwood says Burno has a long history of mental illness and he believes Burno may have been trying to commit suicide by police officer.
The investigation is continuing.
