Young Woman Hit by Car, Driver in Custody

The 21-year-old woman was visiting friends who attend the University of Delaware.

A 21-year-old woman was hit by a car in Newark, Delaware shortly after midnight on Saturday.

Investigators say the woman, from Morristown, NJ, was visiting two of her friends, both 19-year-old students at the University of Delaware, for the school's Homecoming weekend.

At around 12:15 a.m., police say the three women were walking on East Cleveland Avenue when the 21-year-old was suddenly struck by a 2001 Dodge Dakota Pickup truck. Flying debris from the crash also struck the two other women.

Police say the driver of truck did not stop and continued westbound on East Cleveland Avenue. Witnesses were able to record the tag number on the vehicle. Police identified the driver as Errol Johnson, 46, of Newark.

Police responded to Johnson's home where he was found inside his truck in the driveway, according to investigators. Police say he was taken into custody without incident. He has not yet been charged

The 21-year-old woman was taken to Christiana Hospital where she is listed in serious but stable condition with head and internal injuries. One of the 19-year-old women was treated for a minor laceration to the head. The second 19-year-old woman declined medical treatment after suffering a leg injury.
