York County Man Among U.S. Troops Killed in Afghanistan

30 Americans killed in deadliest single loss for U.S. in decade-long war

A York County, Pa. airman was part of a weekend mission in Afghanistan that ended in a deadly helicopter crash, killing 30 U.S. troops.

Daniel Zerbe, 28, was a graduate of Red Lion Area High School in York County. WGAL –TV reported that Zerbe joined the Air Force after graduating in 2001.

The York Dispatch reported that Zerbe wrestled and played football in high school.

The remains of the U.S troops killed in the Afghanistan chopper crash will be flown to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware on Tuesday.

On Saturday the crash also took the lives of 29 other Americans – many Navy SEALs -- and eight Afghans. Military officials say the Chinook was involved in a pursuit of a Taliban leader. An insurgent rocket-propelled grenade was reportedly fired and shot down the chopper.

The crash in eastern Wardak province was the deadliest single loss for U.S. forces in Afghanistan.
