Wynn's Foxwoods Pullout Baffles Rendell

Casino developer showed off design earlier in the week

Gov. Ed Rendell doesn't know why Las Vegas casino developer Wynn Resorts abruptly pulled out of a deal to rescue a Philadelphia gambling project, the Inquirer reported.

Steve Wynn never consulted with Rendell about the deal to give the developer control of the stalled Foxwoods casino project on the waterfront in South Philly, Rendell said Friday at a fundraiser for Rep. Bob Brady.

State regulators dealt with Wynn about the proposal. The project has struggled with financial problems and neighborhood opposition since a slots license was awarded in 2006.

Earlier in the week, Wynn presented designs and financials to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, but suddenly Thursday, he pulled out of the deal.

Some speculated that Wynn might jump into the struggling Revel casino resort project in Atlantic City. A spokeswoman said Wynn did visit AC this week to check out the gaming market but isn't planning on getting into that market, the Associated Press reported.
