More Woes For Lower Merion Schools

Woman suing the district over alleged age, race discrimination

Looks like Lower Merion School District’s current legal issues include not only their Web cam woes, but also a lawsuit from a former employee of Harriton High School.

Besslindora Goree, a former yearlong substitute, is suing the school district for racial and age-based discrimination, according to the Main Line Times.

In the lawsuit, Goree alleges the district broke a promise to hire her as a full-time employee.

She claims that the district had convinced her to relocate from Florida for the one-year position with the promise of a potential job afterward as a teacher.

After Goree’s one-year stint ended, school officials replaced her with a white woman in her mid-20s with fewer teaching credentials, the paper reports.

The 47-year-old African-American claims that her age and race prevented her from earning the long-term position.

During her time at Harriton, Goree helped with create a dual-enrollment college-credit program with Pennsylvania State University’s Brandywine campus.

District officials dispute Goree’s claims that they promised her a position and insist that discrimination did not play a role in their selection of a new teacher.

Goree’s attorneys filed her suit in the federal court in Philadelphia last week.
