Trenton Girl Found Safe, Was Never in Stolen Car: Police

A young girl who police initially believed was inside a stolen vehicle in Trenton was actually asleep in her bedroom the entire time, according to investigators.

The ordeal began when a 2007 Ford Escape was stolen around 8 p.m. Tuesday at Brunswick and Race streets.

The owners of the Escape reported the theft and also told police they believed their 5-year-old daughter was inside the stolen vehicle because they were unable to find her.

Both Trenton Police and New Jersey State Police issued an Amber Alert as they searched for the vehicle and the young girl.

Police eventually found the vehicle on Pond Street and MLK Boulevard but the young girl was not inside. Instead, she was sleeping peacefully in her bedroom inside her home on the unit block of Cuyler Avenue, according to investigators. Police told NBC10 the girl was never inside the vehicle but was in her bed the entire time.

Police canceled the Amber Alert and interviewed the girl's family members.

Investigators are currently dusting the recovered vehicle for fingerprints as they continue to search for the thief.
