UPDATE: The child has died from his or her injuries. NEW DETAILS HERE

Neighbors watched in horror as a woman stopped in the middle of a Burlington County, New Jersey, road and set fire to a young child late Friday night.

Medics rushed to Simontown Road near Magnolia Road in Pemberton Township, New Jersey shortly before 11 p.m. to find the baby severely burned, police said.

Officials airlifted the child, who was alive at the time, to St. Christopher's Hospital in Philadelphia, authorities said.

Crews also transported a woman, who witnesses say was the person who lit the child on fire, to Deborah Hospital.

Investigators have yet to confirm whether the injured woman -- who is approximately 22-years-old -- is a suspect. It is unclear what her relationship is to the child.

The conditions of the baby and the woman are unknown.
