Creek Car Plunge Claims 2nd Victim

A second person injured after a car plunged into Pennypack Creek in Northeast Philadelphia has died.

Philadelphia police tell NBC Philadelphia the 71-year-old Elizabeth Jones died sometime early Tuesday morning at Torresdale Hospital . The driver, Shirley Dougherty, 81, died during the crash.

Investigators say the accident happened Monday afternoon on the 8500 block of Krewstown Road near Algon Avenue. They say the Northeast Philadelphia woman was driving her 2006 Lincoln Town Car south on Krewstown Road when she apparently lost control, plowed through a guardrail and straight down an embankment.

The car fell about 100 feet and flipped over as it crashed into the water.

Although Dougherty was killed during the crash, Jones, was still alive. Two brothers -- who were driving behind the vehicle when it crashed -- tried to save her.

Brandon O'Malley, his brother and another witness rushed down to the creek.

"Our adrenaline kicked in, we pushed the car up, we opened the door and we pulled the lady out," O'Malley said. "She still had her seat belt on and was unconscious."

She was taken to the hospital where she later died.

The crash remained under investigation but police say speed didn't appear to be a factor.

"This could possibly be driver error or maybe a mechanical failure of the vehicle and we're going to determine that in the next couple days," said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

The mangled wreck was pulled up out of the creek around 6:30 p.m. It had handicapped plates.
