Fire officials say a woman has died in a central New Jersey house fire, but a man who also lived at the residence was able to safely escape the flames.

It's not yet clear what sparked the fire at the one-story home in the Highlands, which broke out early Tuesday.

Borough Fire Chief Bill Kane tells the Asbury Park Press that the fire started in the living room of the Shore Drive home and caused considerable damage.

The names of the woman killed and the man who escaped the fire were not released.

The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the blaze.
