Woman Killed in Head-on Crash After Surviving Minor Accident

A woman is killed in a head-on crash while being driven home after surviving a minor accident.

A 71-year old woman being driven home by her husband after she was involved in a minor car accident was killed when his pickup truck was struck by a van head-on, according to a report in the Asbury Park Press.

It happened in Toms River, Ocean County, New Jersey.

Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy told the Asbury Park Press that 71-year-old Jean McCarthy died at a hospital shortly after the head-on crash occurred on Route 70 around 7 o'clock Saturday night.

Her 74-year-old husband Ed McCarthy  was flown to another hospital and remained in serious condition on Sunday.

Police also told the Asbury Park Press the van driver, 28-year-old Abel Hernandez of Lakewood, tried to flee the scene on foot, but was captured near-by. 

He faces numerous charges, including death by auto, reckless driving and DUI, and, according to the newspaper, is being held in lieu of $175,000 bail.

Jean McCarthy was not injured in the earlier accident, which happened not far from the fatal crash scene.
