Woman Kept Bodies of Fetus, Infant in Cooler: Police

Police say woman kept babies’ remains in her closet

A Reading woman is facing abuse of corpse charges after police say they found remains of a fetus and an infant in a cooler in her apartment.

Reading police say 44-year-old Michele Margaret Kalina of the 700 block of Court Street was being held Tuesday on $5 million bail.

Investigators said they responded to a call on July 29 about remains inside a hallway closet of her first-floor apartment, and discovered the bones  and skin fragments of a 5-month-old fetus and one-month-old infant inside a green plastic container and a blue insulated cooler.

A Lehigh County forensic anthropologist estimated the ages of the remains but the genders weren't immediately determined.

Police said that while interviewing Kalina she acknowledged her ownership and control of the closet where the remains were found.

Berks County District Attorney John Adams said additional charges could be filed. The investigation is ongoing.
