Woman Hit by Train While Chasing Dog Identified

Chihuahua the woman died trying to save is unharmed

The woman struck and killed by a SEPTA train Friday while chasing her Chihuahua onto the tracks at the Bryn Mawr station has been identified by Lower Merion Police.

Forty-four-year-old Michelle Rein of the 100 block of South 22nd Street was waiting for a train at the south side of the Bryn Mawr station at 5:55 p.m. Friday when her dog got loose and ran onto the tracks as a train was coming.

Rein ran after her black Chihuahua, ignoring witnesses shouting at her to stop. She was hit by the oncoming R5 Thorndale train, pulled under and killed instantly, police say.

Rein’s dog got away unscathed.

The train engineer saw Rein, blew the horn, applied the emergency brakes but was unable to stop, SEPTA spokesman Andrew Busch told the Inquirer.

The R5 route was shut down for more than two hours after the accident Friday night.
