Women Hurt in Escalator Accident

Two hurt in fall at the King of Prussia mall.

A woman fell on an escalator at the King of Prussia Mall Wednesday. A friend who tried to help her was also hurt.

It happened inside Nordstrom's, according to Montgomery County officials.

Minor injuries, but both were sent to Montgomery Hospital in Norristown to get checked out.

The number one reason people get hurt on escalators is because they fall, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

About 10% of escalator injuries happen when people’s hands or feet or shoes get trapped—most often a foot.

Some other escalator facts from the CPSC:

  • Soft-sided shoes are the most likely to get stuck.
  • Kids tend to get hurt when clothing items or dangling shoelaces get caught.
  • And in case you hadn’t thought about it, escalators tend to be one of the most germ-ridden public places.

Safety Tips from the CPSC:

  • When you stop onto an escalator, make sure the step is flat and fully extended.
  • Make sure your shoes are tied.
  • Face forward, hold the handrail, stand in the center of the step, do not lean on the side, and step off at the end of the ride.
  • Always hold children’s hands on escalators; don't let kids sit or play on the steps.
  • Don't bring children onto escalators in strollers, walkers, or carts.
  • Avoid the sides of escalator steps where entrapment can occur.
  • Know where the emergency escalator shutoff buttons are.
