Woman Gives Birth on the Garden State Parkway

Husband delivers his own baby boy on the side of a busy highway

A baby boy would not wait to get the hospital.

He came into the world early Monday morning on the side of the Garden State Parkway in Elmwood Park, NJ. His father delivered the baby before rescue workers could get to their car.

"The father had wrapped the aby in his coat. They were just sitting there waiting for further assistance," Tooper Kris Towman told The Record.

The baby's mother was in labor and her husband was driving to the hospital. But the baby was apparently in a hurry to make his entrance.

The couple parked on the shoulder along the northbound lanes of the toll road just south of the Interstate 80 interchange. The baby made his entrance right there.

An ambulance showed up shortly after the delivery. The mother and baby were taken to the hospital.

"It's crazy, but everyone's good," said State Police Sgt. Kevin Marron.

The family's names were not immediately released.
