Officer Shoots, Kills Armed Man Who Threatened Woman: Police

A South Jersey police officer shot and killed a man Sunday morning after that man allegedly threatened a woman while armed with a gun.

The officer responded to a domestic disturbance around 10:20 a.m. on the 300 block of New Brooklyn Road in Winslow Township, New Jersey after he received a report of a woman being held at gunpoint by a relative.

When the officer arrived at the home, a woman approached his vehicle and tried to get inside while screaming about a man armed with a gun.

The officer then spotted 59-year-old William Campbell approaching his vehicle while pointing his gun at him, investigators said. The officer then fired one shot from his own weapon, striking Campbell.

Campbell was pronounced dead at the scene and his weapon was recovered by police, according to investigators. The officer was not injured during the ordeal.

The officer, an 18-year veteran of the department, was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. His identity has not been released.

The Camden County Prosecutor's Office conducts an investigation whenever a municipal police officer uses deadly force, as required by the state Attorney General's Office guidelines.
