Students at a Wilmington elementary school were displaced Monday morning due to water damage caused by a small fire.
Just after 8 a.m. about 30 Wilmington City Firefighters and EMS personnel were dispatched to Frederick Douglass Stubbs Elementary School on North Pine Street in Wilmington in response to a fire alarm.
Fire responders found smoke on the second floor of the school and water flooded in the hallway. A fire that started in a classroom had been suppressed by the sprinkler system.
The water caused damage to the adjacent classrooms, and classrooms below also were damaged after water leaked through the ceiling.
The cause and origin of the fire is still currently under investigation by the Wilmington Fire Marshal’s office.
Students were relocated to Howard High School of Technology on East 12th Street in Wilmington for 45 minutes, and then dismissed for the day.
