Wilmington has a new crime fighting tool. They just hired former Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey. NBC10’s Tim Furlong reports. (Published Monday, Jan. 11, 2016)

Philadelphia's former police commissioner will be advising Wilmington officials as they try to cut violence.

Mayor Dennis Williams and Chief of Police Bobby Cummings announced in a news release Monday that the city has retained former Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey as a public safety consultant.

Ramsey, who is considered a national leader on community policing, will work with Cummings on community focused violence reduction strategies.

Ramsey was Philadelphia's police commissioner from 2008 until 2015 and served as the chief of police in the District of Columbia from 1999 until 2007. He started his career at the Chicago Police Department in 1968.

Officials say Ramsey will help with analysis and strategy development as the department implements a public safety plan and recommendations from the Department of Justice's Violence Reduction Network.
