Fire Burns Through Suburban Duplex

A porch fire spread to at least two homes overnight leaving nine people without a home.

Firefighters responded to the 1900 block of Fairview Avenue in Willow Grove, Pa. Friday night around 11 for the report of a porch fire.

Some residents in the home woke up to find the front of the house on fire, according to Roslyn Fire Chief Dale Jonas, one of the fire companies that responded to the scene. Luckily, all the residents made it safely out the back of the home.

The flames quickly engulfed the duplex and began to spread to a neighboring home.

"Cruz, Cruz, Cruz, go out! go out!" That's was Cruz Ramirez told Matt DeLucia he heard as a fire at his neighbors' home spread to his home.

It took 100 or so firefighters from seven separate companies to knock down the flames factors such as the tight street and a gas main that caught fire made the battle against the flames difficult.

A member of the Ramirez family says he saw some men smoking on the porch before the blaze but investigators had yet to determine a cause.

As of daylight Saturday, crews continued to hose down hot spots. Fire marshals from Montgomery County returned the scene around 9:30 a.m. to try and figure out an exact cause for the blaze.

Nine people people from three different families received assistance including food and lodging from the American Red Cross.
