Caught on Camera: Ex-Con Allegedly Punches, Robs NJ Store Clerk

Surveillance video was released Monday by police in South Jersey hoping to nab an alleged thief.

The surveillance video, released by Wildwood Police, shows a female convenience store clerk being repeatedly punched in the face by a man who is allegedly robbing her store.

It all happened Saturday night around 10:45 at the Taquieria Maya convenience store at 205 E. Rio Grande Ave.

The man captured on surveillance video allegedly robbing the store is 49-year old Eric Gaines of Wildwood, according to police.

Gaines scoped the place out before going behind the counter where he allegedly punched the clerk and cleaned out the register, police said.

The blow temporarily knocked out the 24-year-old clerk. But she quickly came to and began to fight back -- during that time Gaines can be seen on tape repeatedly punching the clerk, cops said.

Gaines eventually ran out of the store with about $400 to $500, police said.

The 49-year-old Wildwood man was just released from prison less than a week ago, according to authorities.

Anyone with knowledge of his whereabouts should contact Wildwood Police at 609-522-0222.
