N.J. Beach-Fill Program Eroding

To the chagrin of environmentalists, about $450 million has been spent in New Jersey on federally subsidized beach-fill projects since 1985, but that may be coming to an end.

The White House's Office of Management and Budget opposes approving stimulus package money for the Army Corps of Engineers' beach-fill programs nationwide, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

The programs, which replenish eroding beaches with sand, are crucial to preventing floods, New Jersey congressmen have argued.

Congress has kept the program alive in years past, but the White House's role in approving funds this year could bring that to an end.
