What's Causing the Salty Water in Delaware County?

If you live in Delaware County and have recently noticed your drinking water tastes salty, it’s not in your head.

Officials with Aqua America told NBC10 salt placed on roads this winter has washed into streams and reservoirs, impacting the water supply in the county. Officials have received calls from residents in Springfield Township, Swarthmore and the Darby area reporting the salty water.

Aqua officials said they normally get calls every winter about salty water but have experienced more this season due to increased snowmelt.

Officials told NBC10 the salt mainly contains calcium as well as sodium chloride and that it does not pose a danger to residents. They also said they believe the salt in the water should lessen by Tuesday morning.
