"Snow squalls" moved through our area Saturday night causing whiteout conditions and dangerous travel.
A snow squall is an intense, but limited duration, period of moderate to heavy snowfall accompanied by strong, gusty surface winds and possibly lightning, according to the National Weather Service.
"It's a burst of snow," said NBC10 First Alert Meteorologist Michelle Grossman. "Think of it like a thunderstorm in the winter."
Snow squalls often lead to blowing snow, whiteouts and reduced visibilities.
"Snow squalls can drop an inch or two of snow in a short period of time," said Michelle.
